Peter & the Wolf Live with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra

National Concert Hall
Sunday 31 January, 12 noon (Event duration: 1 hour)
Mark Stephenson conductor
Introduced by popular TV characters from RTÉjr

Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf is given new life in this innovative interpretation, which won the 2008 Oscar for Best Animated Short Film and was hailed by Classic FM Magazine as 'a small masterpiece'. As the Observer wrote: 'Oldies will remember the work from school music lessons, while those coming to the story for the first time will be delighted with this darkly comic modernization.' Composed in 1936, the piece famously uses instruments in the orchestra to represent young Peter and his friends the Duck, the Bird and a Cat, represented by an oboe, flute, and clarinet respectively. Peter, represented by the strings, outwits the Wolf (French horns), though the ending is a twist on the original. Stop-frame model animation, puppets, and digital photography are all used to retell this classic story, with the RTÉ CO playing Prokofiev's beloved score live on stage. The vast Russian forest, the frozen lake, Peter, his Grandfather and his animal friends - all the ingredients of this famous children's tale are brought to life in this treat for fans both old and new. Parents might be interested to know that the whole event is an hour long. The film itself is just over half an hour long. An introductory section will feature TV characters from RTÉjr and the RTÉ CO will open the event with Debussy Children's Corner Suite.
