Jim Sheridan, John Boorman, Brian Kirk and Thaddeus O Sullivan will take to the stage for one of the stand out events of the Symposium as Ireland’s leading directors discuss Ford, his influence on the modern day filmmaking and the vibrant links reflected in their own body of work.

Peter Bogdanovich - Public Interview |

Celebrated American director Peter Bogdanovich was one of the leading figures of the New Hollywood film movement gaining eight Academy Award nominations for his masterpiece The Last Picture Show.
Bogdanovich will discuss his filmmaking career as well as give audiences an interesting insight into John Ford based on the making of his brilliant documentary Directed by John Ford.
The documentary (also screening during the Symposium) includes interviews with Ford himself, Henry Fonda John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Clint Eastwood.

In Conversation With Stephen Frears |

Acclaimed Director Stephen Frears will be the focus of an In Conversation With... event, discussing his varied directing career from films such as High Fidelity, The Queen, Dirty Pretty Things to his entry to the Western canon, The Hi-Lo Country, as well his important contributions to Irish cinema The Van and The Snapper.

Enthusiasm for John Ford extends to many creators across a variety of fields. This panel brings together three diverse writers whose work on page and screen has been inflected by cinema’s poet - Pat McCabe (The Butcher Boy), Colin Batman (Murphys Law) and Ian Power (The Runway) will discuss key scenes from Ford’s work, reflecting on the director’s films and lasting influence on writing for film.

With over 30 years and 30 films, Clint Eastwood’s award-winning collaborations with Joel Cox stand out as one of cinema’s most enduring and productive relationships (Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River).
Taking time out from his work on the upcoming The Trouble with The Curve, John Ford Ireland is delighted to welcome Cox to Ireland and to hear him give a rare insight into his own career and his collaborations with Eastwood.

Music for The Screen with Kyle Eastwood and Christopher Caliendo |

John Ford always understood the importance of music in film. American Jazz musician and screen composer Kyle Eastwood has contributed music to films such as Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino.
Composer, conductor and musician Christopher Caliendo has written over five hundred classical/world music compositions will discuss the various considerations and concerns that surround producing music for the screen.
(Kyle Eastwood and his band also perform on Saturday evening 9th June at the Button Factory; Christopher Caliendo conducts the RTE Concert Orchestra performing his specially commissioned score for Ford’s early epic The Iron Horse at NCH on Thursday 7th June)
