Tony Kushner - IFTA Masterclass

IFTA is delighted to present a Masterclass with Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize winner and four-time Oscar nominated screenwriter and producer, with credits including Angels in America and Steven Spielberg’s films Lincoln, The Fabelmans, Munich and West Side Story.

This masterclass, in association with Screen Ireland, will be moderated by IFTA-winning actor and writer Mark O’Halloran and takes place on Tuesday 30th September at 6pm in the IFI Dublin.

Tony Kushner’s credits include his 1993 Pulitzer-winning play Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, which was adapted into Mike Nichols’ Emmy-winning HBO miniseries starring Al Pacino, Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep. 

Tony Kushner is among the few playwrights in history nominated for an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy & Tony Award.  He has been Oscar nominated for his screenplays for Steven Spielberg’s Munich (starring Daniel Craig and Ciaran Hinds), Lincoln (starring Daniel Day-Lewis) and The Fabelmans (starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano) and as a producer for the latter’s Best Picture nomination. He also wrote Spielberg’s Oscar-winning remake of West Side Story and co-produced Denzel Washington’s Oscar-winning Fences.

Kushner also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series or Movie, for his adaptation for screen from his 1993 Pulitzer-winning play Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, which he adapted into Mike Nichols’ HBO miniseries starring Al Pacino, Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep. 

His acclaimed stage plays include A Bright Room Called Day, The Illusion, Love’s Fire and Caroline, or Change. 

President Barack Obama presented Tony Kushner with the prestigious National Medal of Arts in 2013 for his body of work.

At this special IFTA Masterclass, Kushner will discuss working as a screenwriter and producer of high-level Hollywood films, his transition from playwriting to screenwriting, his approach to tackling complex social and political themes, adapting historical events for the screen, collaborating with filmmakers such as Mike Nichols and Steven Spielberg, working with actors to bring incredible performances to screen, and much more.
