A look back at IFTA in 2015

With 2015 almost over, IFTA looks back over what has been a fantastic year for Irish film and television. In a first for the Academy, the larger annual IFTA Ceremony was split into two separate distinct smaller Award ceremonies – the IFTA Film & Drama Awards and the IFTA Gala Television Awards – in order to best reflect the continued growth in the Irish industry.


In what was an unforgettable night at the Mansion House, Dublin on Sunday, May 24th – Cartoon Saloon’s Oscar nominated animated film Song of the Sea bookended its’ astounding awards season by winning the IFTA Award for Best Film and acclaimed series Love/Hate won Best Drama Series for the show’s final season. Oscar nominated writer/director/producer Jim Sheridan received the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award presented to him by actor Sean Bean.

Other winners on the night included Moe Dunford (Best Actor Film for Patricks Day) who can be seen in 2016 in internationally renowned show Vikings as well as in John Butler’s upcoming comedy Handsome Devil.


Winning the Best Supporting Actor Film Award for Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank, Domhnall Gleeson has since starred in acclaimed films such as Ex Machina, The Revenant and Brooklyn as well as the highly anticipated global phenomenon Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Actress Sarah Greene won two awards on the night (Rising Star and Best Supporting Actress Film for Noble) and she is also making a name for himself both in Ireland and internationally. She recently had a role alongside Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper in kitchen drama Burnt as well as Sky Atlantic supernatural drama series Penny Dreadful. She will next be seen in RTÉ series Rebellion which will air in early 2016.

Rebellion will also star another 2015 IFTA winner – Charlie Murphy – who won Best Actress Drama for her role in Love/Hate. 2015 was a busy year for Murphy with roles in Yann Demange’s 71 as well as BAFTA-winning BBC series Happy Valley.



At the IFTA Gala Television Awards on Thursday, October 22nd – Irish drama Red Rock won Best Irish Soap as well as The IFTA Gala People’s Choice Award.


Brendan O’Carroll – whose show Mrs Browns Boys continues to sell worldwide – was awarded the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award for Comedy, presented by presenter and former Lifetime recipient Gay Byrne. Mrs Browns Boys also received the IFTA for Best Comedy.

50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy was awarded the IFTA for Best Entertainment. Featuring mother and son duo Nancy and Baz Ashmawy, 50 Ways has also recently won an International Emmy Award. Baz was also recently seen on RTÉ documentary Baz: The Lost Muslim where he explored his heritage.


Actress and writer Sharon Horgan won two awards –Best Actress and Best Writer – for her highly rated Channel 4 show Catastrophe. Horgan’s new show Divorce, which she wrote and Exec Produced, will screen in 2016 and has Sarah Jessica Parker in the lead role.

Best Actor winner was Enda Oates for his performance in RTÉ soap Fair City. Oates can next be seen in Jim Sheridan’s film The Secret Scripture as well as Tile Films three part drama series Wrecking The Rising for TG4.
